El origen del municipio se encuentra en el repartimiento de Sevilla de 1253, por el cual el rey Alfonso X dona al cabildo de la Iglesia catedral de Sevilla, entre otras tierras del Aljarafe sevillano, la villa de "Faznalcázar".
La Constitución de 1812 pone fin al sistema concejil y da paso al Ayuntamiento Constitucional, aunque este cambio no será efectivo hasta la proclamación del Estatuto Real de 1834, tras el breve paréntesis iniciado en 1820 con el Pronunciamiento de Riego. En el nuevo sistema, el único alcalde es elegido mediante sufragio directo y restringido.
